In angling terms 2016 could be described as a good year! Yes, a good year for sea trout on the (Moy) estuary, not a lot of sunshine but excellent angling weather.
The first week of May was a wash-out but from there on we enjoyed good dryish weather with excellent runs of sea trout and a good head of fish built up in the lower estuary. Days with favourable winds and suitable tides always produce the best fish.
The weather broke sometime in August and as usual our best fish were the first to run upstream where they would remain until they spawned. Unlike salmon, many of these trout will make it back to sea and return sometime next season.
We are extremely fortunate here on the Moy as we miles away from the nearest fish farm. Have no doubt, this is the reason we have such a healthy stock of sea trout along the north Mayo and Sligo coastline.
The boats are stored away, the rods are in the loft and the clubs are in the boot, need I say more!
I will sign off for 2016 by wishing you all the very best for 2017.
